Bog om Londons historie

Hvis man vil læse en roman om Londons historie, er bogen "London" af Edward Rutherfurd et godt bud. Det er et digert murstensværk på knap 1000 sider, som starter i 54 f. Kr. og slutter i 1997.

Historien fortælles igennem flere slægter, som er flettet ind i hinanden på kryds og tværs i de mere end 2000 år bogen foregår. Bogen beskriver mange store begivenheder i Londons histore bla. vikingerne, Karl 1.s halshugning, Pesten, Den Store Brand, Pocahontas besøg, Mayflower-sejladsen og Hitlers bombning. Byens udvikling og vækst beskrives med bla. opførslen af Tower of London, Sct. Pauls Cathedral og London Bridge.

Edward Rutherfurd er en britisk forfatter, som er født i 1948 i Salisbury, England. Han er uddannet på Cambridge University og Stanford Business School. Edward Rutherfurd er kendt for sine tykke, episke romaner, og han debuterede i 1987 med romanen "Sarum", der er en historisk roman, som foregår over titusind år og starter med opførelsen af Stonehenge. Derudover har han bla. udgivet historiske bøger om New York, Dublin og Paris. Hans bøger er udgivet på 20 forskellige sprog.

Jeg er lige blevet færdig med "London", og hvis man er til historiske romaner, er den et must at læse. Nu vil jeg prøve kræfter med en anden af Rutherfurds bøger "New York", da vi skal besøge den amerikanske storby til sommer.

The novel describe many event in London´s history for example the Norman Conquest, the Plaque, the Great Fire of London, Parliament's rise and Hitler's Blitz. We watch the martyrdom of St Thomas More, the beheading of Charles I, the visit of Pocahontas and the sailing of the Mayflower. As the city grows, we witness the building of the Tower of London, St. Pauls Cathedral and London Bridge.

Edward Rutherfurd is known for his thick, epic novels, and debuted in 1987 with the novel "Sarum", wich is a historical novel that takes place over ten thousand years, starting with the construction of Stonehenge. His books are published in 20 different language.
I have just finished "London", and if you are into historical novels, you must read this one. Now I will try another of Rutherfurds novels "New York" as we will be visiting the US city this summer.
